The Role of Mass Media in Shaping People's Cultural Identity

Abstract


 

Media massa mempunyai peran penting dalam membentuk identitas budaya masyarakat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki dinamika interaksi antara media massa dan identitas budaya, serta tantangan kontemporer yang muncul dalam konteks ini. Melalui analisis literatur, penelitian ini menguraikan perkembangan media massa dari masa ke masa, mulai dari era surat kabar dan radio hingga era digital saat ini, yang mempercepat pertukaran budaya secara global. Globalisasi telah memperluas akses terhadap budaya populer di seluruh dunia, namun juga menimbulkan pertanyaan tentang representasi budaya di media massa dan potensi stereotip budaya. Media massa tidak hanya mempengaruhi identitas budaya masyarakat secara keseluruhan, namun juga membantu dalam proses konstruksi identitas individu melalui identifikasi dengan representasi budaya tertentu dalam media. Peraturan pemerintah mengenai media massa penting dalam memastikan representasi budaya yang adil dan akurat, meskipun hal ini sering menjadi sumber kontroversi. Pendidikan tentang literasi media juga diperlukan untuk membantu masyarakat memahami pengaruh media massa terhadap identitas budaya mereka. Tantangan kontemporer mencakup pertanyaan mengenai homogenisasi versus diversifikasi budaya, serta bagaimana mengatasi stereotip budaya di media massa. Namun, dengan meningkatnya kesadaran akan keragaman budaya dan peningkatan literasi media, masyarakat dapat menjadi lebih kritis terhadap representasi budaya di media massa dan lebih menghargai budaya lokal dan global. Penelitian ini memberikan wawasan mendalam mengenai kompleksitas hubungan antara media massa dan identitas budaya masyarakat serta menyoroti pentingnya pemahaman holistik dalam menjawab tantangan dan peluang yang terkait dengan fenomena ini.
