Abstract

Abstract—Enterococci are germs frequently responsible for urinary tract infections. The objectives of this study are to give the hospital prevalence of enterococcal urinary tract infections, to describe the socio-demographic factors associated with these infections and to evaluate the antibiotic resistance of these enterococci. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out from January to August 2022 at the laboratory of the University Hospital Center Joseph Raseta Befelatanana, taking as the study population all the results of the CBEU during this period. The hospital prevalence of enterococcal urinary tract infections was 4%. Regarding the associated factors, women (4.5%) (p=0.47; NS), subjects aged 40 to 50 (5.9%)(p=0.20; NS), patients with urinary signs (5.6%)(p=0.29; NS) and hospitalized in internal medicine (7.5%)(p=0.01) were the most affected by urinary enterococcal infections. Enterococcal antibiotic resistance varies from 0% for vancomycin to 76.2% for erythromycin. Thus, compliance with hygiene measures is fundamental in hospitals to limit the spread of multi-resistant enterococci isolates.
