Elena Garro: Un Hogar Sólido; Una Relectura Desde El Mundo Femenino

Abstract

This paper offers a critical reinterpretation of Un hogar sólido by Elena Garro, focusing on the representation of the feminine world within a patriarchal context. The study examines how Garro constructs female characters that transcend the boundaries of life and death, highlighting their central role in sustaining both family and social structures. Through textual analysis, the research explores the symbolic meaning of the home as both a space of protection and confinement, particularly in its transformation into a tomb. The paper also discusses how domestic practices and interpersonal dynamics reflect broader socio-cultural expectations imposed on women. Drawing on feminist perspectives, the study emphasizes the tension between autonomy and subordination experienced by female characters, as well as the consequences of challenging traditional roles. Additionally, the work situates Garro’s writing within her personal and historical context, considering the marginalization faced by women writers in mid-twentieth-century Mexico. Ultimately, the analysis demonstrates that Un hogar sólido not only portrays the complexity of female identity but also subtly denounces the inequalities and violence embedded in patriarchal systems.
