Abstract

A study about the utilization of cover crops on reducing the potential erosion in agricultural land was conducted from October 2016 to Februari 2017. This study was aimed (1) to examine the effect of vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides), king grass (Pennisetum purpuroides), elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum), and tree marigold (Tithonia diversivolia) cultivation on soil physical properties and reducing erosion rate, and (2) to identified the root development stage of Vetiveria zizanioides with different age affect the root system. The experiment was designed with a completely randomized layout with three replications using five treatments. The soil physical characteristics and plant data were statistically analyzed with analysis of variance (ANOVA) and followed by Tukey`s test. The results showed that there was no significant effect from the cultivation of cover crops to soil physical characteristics. However, the cultivation of cover crops to the soil was effective to decrease the rate of run off and reduced the potential erosion. The experiment revealed that the elephant grass has significant effect in decreasing rate of run off and amount of soil loss.
